The Feldenkrais Method encourages the development of self-awareness
through the mindful investigation of movement patterns. The benefits of the
method include: improved posture, increased ease of movement, and increased
sense of well-being. It can be used as a way to overcome injury and physical
limitations, or simply as a means to feel better about one's self and one's
movement. The method uses two forms of teaching.
In Awareness Through Movement lessons the teacher verbally leads a group
of students through a series of movements, usually oriented around a
specific theme or function - such as sitting or walking.
In Functional Integration the teacher works with an individual, mainly
through touch. The student is fully clothed and s/he normally lies on a low
table; although, lessons can take place in sitting or in movement.
Functional Integration lessons normally address a limitation or difficulty
brought up by the student at the start of the lesson.
Both Functional Integration and Awareness Through Movement invite the
student to examine the way in which s/he moves in order to find new, more
efficient, patterns of action. As Moshe Feldenkrais said: "When you know
what you do, you can do what you like."
